Grace and resilience

Life amid ruins, recollections

A recent moment complements this. Seen from the window of the Shanghai home of the artist ZHENG Zaidong 鄭在東 (b. 1953), an ensemble of rocks is laid out to suggest a landscape - set in a frame intended for an air conditioner. Beneath is sold land and condemned buildings soon to be torn down and built over. In a freefall of decay, the neighborhood lingers in a momentary limbo as planning and financial transactions are completed.

The rocks enact the archetype of a garden of the mind, suggesting the persistence of balanced emotional life even in times and places that seem inimitable to this expression.
