Grandeur, abundance, panache

Mounting with care and flourish

WEN Zhengming’s 文徵明 (1470-1559) faint and tender recollection of a landscape seen with friends is mounted within antique gold brocade. This setting gives emotional resonance to the painting itself, creating something akin to the effect of a relic. This is furthered by setting the painting in a box of dear zitan wood carved in the form of bamboo, the title of the work inlaid on the cover in mother of pearl. The mounting and box were most likely the work of later Japanese collectors.
