| He would hope to be awakened with sunlight, the sounds of birds and insects, and the play of the wind among bamboo or leaves. At dawn, sunlight would be at its most dramatic, suffusing the paper laid over wooden lattices. Shadows would dress plain walls and stone floors. Throughout house and garden, a variety of lattices gently divide one space from another. Depending on their complexity and whether they were covered with paper or filled with coloured glass, differing degrees of psychological separation could be achieved. Lattice patterns took many conventional forms, ranging from geometric rhythms to representations of auspicious and seasonal plants. Outside, lattice imagery might be formally or metaphorically related to nearby rocks or plantings. |   |   | |
